States reported that 224,000 workers filed for new unemployment benefits during the week ending Jan. 27, an increase of 9,000 from the previous week’s revised level. The weekly claims are consistent with an overall low level of layoffs, despite recent cutbacks in the tech sector, as the unemployment rate has remained under 4 percent over the past two years.
About 1.8 million workers continue to claim unemployment benefits.
Companies in the private sector added 107,000 workers in January, less than the revised 158,000 jobs added in December, ADP reported Wednesday.
On Friday, the Department of Labor will report on how many jobs the U.S. economy added in January, the unemployment rate and wage gains for the month.
